With a mailing list of thousands of lawyers and legal employer representatives, Flex-Time Lawyers LLC has held over 100 chapter meetings. The chapter meetings are held five times a year in New York and Philadelphia. Guest speakers are often hosted to discuss topics relating to work/life balance and the retention and promotion of women attorneys.

The mission of Flex-Time Lawyers LLC is:
  • Empower lawyers seeking a resource on work/life balance and women by providing support, career guidance and networking opportunities.
  • Improve work/life balance and the retention and promotion of women attorneys by providing education and a forum for lawyers and legal employers to share information to effect change in the legal profession.
  • Inspire change on work/life and women's issues for employers by improving their training, policies, practices and vision.
Chapter members have gained business development contacts and other professional leads, including job opportunities. Members have used information shared in meetings to effect personal and policy changes in workplaces.

Flex-Time Lawyers LLC also benefits employers whose lawyers gain strategies to succeed, networking tips and insights on achieving work/life balance. Firms find the meetings provide contacts that lead to prospective clients. Employers also benefit from their lawyers’ focus on issues such as time management, handling of work overflow, responsiveness while outside the office, morale, and overall productivity.

Chapter meetings began in 1999 when Founder and President, Deborah Epstein Henry was practicing as a commercial litigator at a large firm in Philadelphia. She e-mailed six Philadelphia lawyers saying she was starting a brown-bag lunch group for lawyers to discuss work/life issues. Within days, 150 lawyers e-mailed her back indicating an interest to participate. The mailing list rapidly grew and Debbie began facilitating regular meetings with lawyers to discuss work/life topics and flexible and reduced schedules. Debbie founded the New York Chapter of Flex-Time Lawyers LLC in September 2002.

Although the meetings have always been open to both women and men who are interested in work/life balance, the majority of attendees have been women with children. For that reason, the topics covered have expanded to not only work/life balance but also issues involving the retention and promotion of women. Attendees include lawyers looking for support, career guidance and networking opportunities, and legal employer representatives who work as lawyers or in professional development roles who come to learn the latest trends on work/life and women's issues in the law. The meetings often host guests including authors, experts, judges and bar association representatives.

Lawyer members come from the city and suburbs and work in large and small law firms, in-house, government, not-for-profit, and solo practitioner settings. Women and men, law students, legal managers, legal administrators, recruiters, legal assistants, paralegals, full-time lawyers, stay-at-home parents and others looking for a resource on work/life and women's issues are also welcome to join as members.
